Before I begin, this post is not intended to offend anybody besides those mentioned in the last paragraph. In fact I openly invite constructive conversation so as to educate myself further on the matter.

This whole issue came up when I looked at the front page of my company’s news magazine. The front cover of which showed a woman with the caption “Out and proud”. This really bothered me, and here’s why.I should now point out that I am not homophobic or prejudiced in any way against the people I mention in this post, again besides the people mentioned in the last paragraph.

What bothered me about this image / article is the fact that it seems to be necessary to point out what is different in people. For example, why is it a big deal in the first place that this woman is both openly homosexual and proud of it? I liken this to an article I read online a few months ago where there was a call to put in place a ruling where football clubs had to interview at least one black man for the role of the manager of their club. It’s also the same as the legal requirement for a company to interview a certain number of handicapped people for a job. Is this not just separating these people because of their differences? What sense does it make to rule out somebody just for the sake of making sure you / your company doesn’t appear intolerant? These people you are accounting for may be completely unsuitable for the role for which they are being considered.
Surely enforcing these laws / rules and celebrating these achievements based on ethnicity, sexuality or physical / mental capabilities is prejudiced itself by way of pointing out the fact that these people are different in some way when I thought we were all supposed to be the same.We no longer live in a society where it is deemed acceptable to make fun of, or harm somebody because of their differences. I thought the days had passed where women couldn’t vote and black people had to sit at the back of the bus, yet we seem to enjoy covering up the equality sign with one that says “look at what this [insert difference here] person achieved”, pronouncing their difference.
My views on this whole topic can be likened to my view on gay marriage. Why is there such a clamour for gay people to be allowed to get married? Why should they have to be allowed in the first place? What difference is there between them and the heterosexual contingent? A person’s sexuality does not define them in the same way that a person’s race or physical ability doesn’t.
So why don’t we all just ignore what’s different and get on with life?The only people that I believe should be treated as different and pre-judged in any way is this type of person.
